General Election 2024

Rishi Sunak has just announced that the UK will finally have its general election on 4 July 2024. It cannot come soon enough. After fourteen years of Tory failure, people across the country know it’s time for change. Its time to get Britain’s future back.

Labour for a New Democracy wishes good luck over the coming six weeks to all Labour candidates - and to all those campaigning for a Labour government. Together we can turn the page on this disastrous Conservative government and bring in the decade of national renewal the UK so desperately needs.

Yet our First Past the Post voting system means only around a third of seats will be seriously contested: millions who live elsewhere already know their votes won’t count and Parliament once again will fail to reflect how we vote. Labour members up and down the country will be asked not to campaign in their communities where they live, because of FPTP's safe and unwinnable seats.

Labour has recognised that these flaws of First Past the Post are driving distrust and alienation in our political system. If the next Labour government is serious about restoring trust and fairness in politics - and delivering the decade of renewal Britain needs - it must make this the last election held under this broken system.
