Labour MP to Chair APPG for Fair Elections

We’re excited to announce that Labour and cross-party MPs have come together to form an All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections.

Chaired by Alex Sobel (Labour MP for Leeds Central & Headingley), the APPG seeks to enhance the integrity of UK democracy by:

πŸ—³οΈ Replacing First Past the Post with a proportional system that makes seats match votes.

πŸ’· Eliminating dark money and undemocratic influence from politics.

πŸ“° Countering disinformation in public discourse.

Its goal is to deliver clean and fair elections where all votes count.

Labour for a New Democracy is delighted to be working closely with Fair Vote, the APPG’s secretariat, to campaign for electoral reform across Parliament and beyond.

In the last Parliament, the Labour movement came out in favour of electoral reform, including CLPsmemberstrade unions, annual conference - and this consensus was partially reflected in the party programme.

As well as consolidating this support, our task in this new parliamentary term is to extend the campaign into Parliament: organising amongst the growing ranks of pro-PR Labour MPs.

At the same time, we need a major increase in external, public pressure for PR. By acting as a bridge between Parliament and public campaigns, the APPG for Fair Elections will play a significant role supporting and amplifying work both inside and outside Westminster.

We look forward to working with Labour MPs and the whole APPG as the campaign for PR moves into its exciting next phase. To hear more about the new group - and wider plans of the #Labour4PR movement - join our campaign update on Wednesday 11 September: the new parliament.
