Burnham calls for voting system review
During our fringe event at the Labour Party conference, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called on the government to review the First Past the Post voting system:
“I appreciate they’re probably not ready to go out there - to commit to a big change. But why not launch a review of the voting system for the House of Commons? And why not consider carefully whether Proportional Representation has the support of the country?”

He's absolutely right.
Thanks to the work of members and trade unionists across the Labour movement, the party has officially recognised that First Past the Post is flawed and causing distrust and alienation in British politics.
We cannot leave this system in place if we're going to restore people's trust in politics. We agree with Andy that an open and inclusive review of the electoral system is the right first step for the government to take - and it's great to hear this call from such a high profile Labour figure.
